A special video shows a breakdown of the process Eiichiro Oda used to create the cover art to the next volume of One Piece.

A Twitter video from One Piece's Japanese Twitter account breaks down the artistic process behind creating the cover art of Eiichiro Oda's beloved manga One Piece.

The 40-second-long video shows how each of the cover's characters start off as rough black-and-white sketches that are later colored in and layered on the template separately to create the final product. Oda's creative process can be seen as the artist draws and re-draws certain parts of the image and experiments with different color schemes. The cover featured in the video is for the manga's 103rd volume, which will be released on Aug. 4.

The tweet also states that the final version of the illustration will be unveiled on "One Piece Day," which takes place on July 23, (July 22 in North America, due to time zone differences). This day has been recognized since 2017 as the official anniversary of the manga's debut, (although in actuality the manga launched on July 19, 1997). There is an official livestream for One Piece Day every year that covers major developments within the One Piece multimedia franchise. In addition to updates about the anime series, films and video games, the event this year will also include musical performances and a special revival screening for the 1998 OVA, One Piece-Take Down the Pirate Ganzaki!. This rarely seen OVA was directed by Goro Taniguchi, who is also helming the highly-anticipated One Piece Film: Red.

This year has been an eventful one for One Piece. In June, it was confirmed that series' creator Eiichiro Oda was making plans for the series' final story arc. After the completion of the long-running "Wano Country" arc, Oda took a four-week hiatus to finalize plans for the last stretch of Luffy's long journey. The first chapter of this final arc will be released on July 25, although fans should keep in mind that, considering the impressive length of some of One Piece's past storylines, the actual ending of the series may still be a long way off.

Aside from Oda's announcement that the One Piece manga is entering its final arc, this year will also mark the release of One Piece Film: Red, the 15th animated film in the One Piece franchise. This film, which will debut in Japan on Aug. 6 and in North America this fall, revolves around Luffy and the gang meeting a woman named Uta, who also happens to be the daughter of infamous pirate Red-Haired Shanks. Netflix is also collaborating with Tomorrow Studios to produce a live-action adaptation of One Piece, the release date of which is not yet known.

The entire One Piece anime series is available on Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
