Mondi commissioned a life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare its new paper pallet packaging innovation Advantage StretchWrap with traditional plastic stretch film packaging.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, commissioned a life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare its new breakthrough paper pallet packaging innovation Advantage StretchWrap with traditional plastic stretch film packaging. The complete study is conducted by an external consulting company, complies with ISO standards, and includes strict external review. Based on the assumption that the two materials are recycled at the end of the life cycle, the survey results show that, as one of the LCA indicators, Mondi's paper pallet packaging has a low impact on the climate.

The basis of the comparison is the potential environmental impact of packaging a pallet. LCA examined 16 indicators to understand the potential trade-offs between the two materials. It covers all relevant life cycle stages, from raw material extraction and production to application on customer pallets. In addition, the impact of the end-of-life phase is also evaluated.

LCA found that Advantage StretchWrap’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were reduced by 62% compared with the original plastic stretch film, and its greenhouse gas emissions were reduced compared to the plastic stretch film made with 50% recycled content 49%. Advantage StretchWrap has a lower environmental impact than plastics in many categories, including climate change and the use of fossil resources. Plastic stretch film does perform better on some indicators, such as land use and freshwater eutrophication.

"Given the complexity of material selection, we believe that independent critical review is essential to ensure that LCA provides objective and reliable results, with a focus on the environmental benefits of each material. At Mondi, we use these results as part of our decision-making process Karoline Angerer, Mondi Kraft Paper and Paper Bag Product Sustainability Manager, said: "Our MAP2030 sustainability commitment. Our customers value our attention to detail and how we use our EcoSolutions approach to collaborate to develop sustainable design solutions. "
