Eastman is now supplying its Tritan Renew brand of recycled resin to Tupperware Brands, which the company uses to produce containers. | Provided by Tupperware Brands.

Three virgin plastic producers expanded their recycled resin products, and a chemically recycled copolyester found a home in Tupperware food and beverage containers.

Recycled PE for film: According to a press release, Nova Chemicals announced that it can provide three resins made from 100% post-consumer PE. According to the press release, the plastics manufacturer in Calgary, Alberta is offering a natural LLDPE/LDPE derived from waste plastics in the distribution center, suitable for shrinking, stretch packaging and e-commerce applications. It provides natural LLDPE/LDPE from agricultural films, suitable for new agricultural films, heavy transport bags, finishing shrinkage or e-commerce applications. Nova provides white LLDPE from agricultural films, suitable for new agricultural films, heavy transport bags, collated shrink bags, garbage bags and liners, and e-commerce applications. Last fall, Nova announced a supply agreement with recyclers Merlin Plastics and Revolution.

Marine plastic compound: Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has released a PC/PET compound made from at least 10% mechanically recycled RPET. According to the press release, the PET in the new XENOY compound comes from areas where the plastic is at risk of entering the ocean. The compound is suitable for a range of applications, including electronics and automobiles. A representative of SABIC discussed this and other recycling-related work at the plastic recycling conference last week.

50% recycled copolyester: Eastman now supplies its Tritan Renew brand of recycled resin to Tupperware Brands Corporation, which uses it to produce containers. To make Tritan Renew, Eastman, a plastics and chemical manufacturer based in Kingsport, Tennessee, depolymerized low-grade polyester waste and mixed the resulting basic chemicals into the company's plastic production equipment. The resulting product has been used in Camelbak and Nalgene products, with a recycled content of up to 50%. An Eastman leader gave a speech on the company's chemical recycling commercialization work at the plastic recycling conference last week. A press release stated that the Tupperware brand will use plastic in a container with a transparent glass-like design. This is not the first time that the Tupperware brand has used chemically recycled plastics: more than a year ago, the company announced that it would start using chemically recycled polyolefins provided by SABIC.

Recycled resin product portfolio: Plastics manufacturer LyondellBasell has launched a series of recycled polymer products called Circulen. The product portfolio includes CirculenRecover, which is a resin manufactured through a mechanical recycling process, CirculenRevive, which is a plastic produced through chemical recycling, and CirculenRenew, which is a plastic based on alternative raw materials, such as used edible oil. According to the press release, the product portfolio is currently only available in Europe, but will soon be available in North America and China. The Rotterdam-based company aims to sell 2 million tons of recycled and “renewable polymers” annually by 2030.

According to the annual report of the National PET Container Resources Association, the demand for RPET has increased by 10% in 2020, but this is accompanied by a decrease in the collection of PET bottles.

Three states on the west coast have signed a comprehensive recycling bill. Now, the real work begins to sort out the details of how the policy will affect the plastic recycling industry.

According to an industry lobbying company, the Democratic Party’s Social Infrastructure Act has eliminated the proposed raw plastic tax of 20 cents per pound.

NOVA Chemicals is expanding its PCR business to produce resins made from more recycled plastics, which will be supplied to Charter Next Generation for a range of non-food flexible film applications.

A plant in Texas will use chemical recycling technology to convert 66 million pounds of waste plastic each year into raw materials for new resin production.

If the carpet contains at least 10% recycled content, then starting from April next year, California consumers will pay a lower recycling system fee at the checkout counter.

Last month, news about another polyethylene film recycling facility, recycling content certification program, and shipping industry struggles attracted readers’ clicks.
