Work on Anish Kapoor's reflective "bean" sculpture at 56 Leonard Street, the 831-foot residential skyscraper in Tribeca, is about to be completed. The final curved part of the amorphous work of art was finally assembled, closing the missing exterior part facing Leonard and the corner of Church Street. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Hill West Architects, 56 Leonard Street is one of the tallest buildings in Lower Manhattan with a unique irregular cantilevered floor. Anish Kapoor is also known for designing the Chicago chrome Cloud Gate and the ArcelorMittal track for the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

YIMBY's previous update shows that the sculpture design is roughly half assembled. After a long pause, work has recently resumed. The top of the beans is slightly higher than the height of the cantilevered second level, and most of the sculptures are hidden under the board, helping to form the overall bean shape.

Photos taken around Douzi show that there are building barriers and metal fences around the entire corner of 56 Leonard Street. The chrome finish is protected by a thin temporary protective film. Work stopped during the pandemic, and the hollow interior of the beans was covered with wooden boards until construction could continue. The adjacent ground floor retail space is still available for rent.

YIMBY covered the arrival and assembly of the first parts almost two years ago. Read more here to understand what the process looks like.

Although YIMBY predicts that this long-awaited milestone in the construction of 56 Leonard Street will end sometime next year, it is still unclear when the bean will be completed.

About five years later, the controversial 56 Leonard Street is still under construction. At least it has a bit of Chicago's cold spice.

Anyway! It is ready to be installed and placed in the designated location. I saw a shiny surface, shiny and beautiful: thanks to Michael Yang.

According to the rendering, it is more squashed than forced.

A beautiful large-scale artwork, just like the building above it. People only hope that it can withstand various factors and any additional abuse that it inevitably suffers.

The ground floor space will never be rented out

I think I will look better in that mirror

I want to know how long it will take for it to be "scratched or marked" by gang graffiti? ! 🤔

Why is the Chicago bean? It was okay before.
