Macfarlane Packaging announced that it has replaced the existing blow-molded, hand-stretched packaging with a film containing at least 30% recycled materials.

The inclusion of recycled content reduces the amount of raw material used in the manufacturing process. This change will apply to McFarland’s heavy, super heavy and super heavy blown film inventory lines.

According to the company, this makes stretch packaging comply with the proposed UK plastics tax, which is scheduled to begin in April 2022. The legislation aims to revitalize the UK recycling industry by requiring plastic packaging to contain at least 30% recycled content-products that do not meet the requirements are subject to a tax of £200 per ton.

In July 2020, Macfarlane Packaging also announced that its small, medium and large bubble packaging production line inventory has been replaced with Sealed Air AirCap bubble packaging, which contains at least 50% recycled materials. The company said that this change has reduced more than 100 tons of virgin plastic material from its supply chain.

Marketing Manager Laurel Granville said: "We are committed to helping our customers reduce their environmental impact. With this in mind, we constantly review our products and services to reduce material waste and increase recyclability.

Adding 30% recycled content stretch film to our product portfolio further expands our sustainable product range. We estimate that this change will reduce another 250 tons of raw material from the supply chain. Customers now have more options for packaging solutions to ensure compliance with the UK plastics tax in 2022. "
